Are Plantation Shutters Easy To Clean?

If you already have or are thinking of purchasing plantation shutters then the chances are one of the main questions you will ask is if your shutters are going to be easy to clean. Even though plantation shutters are extremely hardwearing, to keep them looking at their best they do need to be maintained. The type of maintenance they need will depend on the type of material they are made from.

Regular cleaning

As part of your usual cleaning routine you shouldnt leave your shutters out assuming they will take care of themselves. The horizontal slat design allowing them to let more or less light in is only effective when you keep them clean of dust and dirt. You can do this by lightly dusting with a cloth and for any tough marks you can use a slightly damp cloth and light disinfectant without a problem.

Another way to remove dust and dirt is to use a vacuum on each side of the slats, however you should be careful in doing so and use the lightest suction setting if your vacuum allows.

Deep cleaning

Real Wood If your plantation shutters are made from real wood then using water on them could affect the material causing it to warp out of shape. The best cleaning method for wooden shutters is to spray polish directly onto a cloth to clean each slat. Any areas that are harder to reach with a cloth can be cleaned with a toothbrush.

Fake wood For fake wood shutters that are usually made from UPVC you can use water and an all-purpose cleaner to keep them in tip top condition. Mix a little of your cleaner with luke warm water and wipe the slates with a cloth. Once you have done this, wipe again with fresh water and dry them with a towel or cloth to prevent water marks. Bear in mind that should you have the shutters up in a kitchen or somewhere else where they attract more dirt than say in your living room you will need a detergent that is slightly stronger to tackle marks.

External Shutters For shutters that are located externally you are more likely to attract more dirt and grime. You will be able to take away this extra dirt by using a hose pipe with a decent amount of pressure. You may need to use a little detergent on stubborn stains, but dont overdo it.

More advice If you have noticed that your plantation shutters are becoming stiff or looser than they once were you can repair them easily by using a cross head screwdriver to adjust the tension screws. This should have your shutters working again as well as the day they were installed. Ensure that when you are opening and closing your shutters that you are gentle with the rod.

If you choose plantation shutters to decorate your windows, rest assured that they are easy enough to look after and incorporate into your usual cleaning routine. No need to hire a professional as you will more than likely already have the cleaning materials required to hand.

House Renovation Ideas: Would You Consider Shutters For Your Project?

Have you given window shutters any thought when planning your home decor?

Shutters are a great option for people wishing to update their home. Not only are they a relatively easy to do, small-scale job in comparison to other renovation projects. But they still make a big difference to the overall aesthetic of a property. They also up the value of a home, which is something to keep in mind if you might be considering selling up anytime soon.

They even have a tonne of hidden benefits including reduced energy bills. Easy maintenance And are very versatile.

But there isn't just one standard choice. You will have a whole host of options available to you.

Shutter type The two major types you will be choosing between are solid, or louvred (the ones with slats) shutters. You can get one, the other, or both combined.

Which one is best for you will depend not only on the look you prefer but on what you want from your new additions. Louvred shutters can come with slats that open and close, meaning you will have more control over lighting. While solid shutters are the best for insulation.

Style No matter what shape your windows are there's a shutter to fit them. But on top of shapes, shutters come in many different styles.

Cafe style: where only the bottom half of the window is fitted with a shutter leaving the top half exposed.

Tier on tier: Where the whole window is fitted with four separate shutters (two on the top half, two on the bottom) that can all be opened and closed independently of each other.

Full height: Probably the first style that comes to mind when you think shutters. These are the traditional kind, two full sized shutters on either side of the window.

Construction For the majority of windows, a pair of shutters works excellently. However, if you have a larger area of glass to cover, such as French doors. You may prefer a different design option, such as large shutters that can be folded up to open. They are made up of a few different panels that are joined by hinges.

Material Hardwood is the most used material due to its durability. With specific species of wood (like mahogany) proving to be particularly equipped to resist rotting and insect problems.

Although depending on the room, engineered wood may be a better choice. For example the bathroom, due to the amount of moisture the shutters will be exposed to.

Finish This is where you get to fully customise the design of your shutters.

For a traditional, natural look, stains are a great choice that allows you to keep the appearance of natural wood.

For a look that compliments other aspects of your colour scheme, paint is always an option. Although if your personal taste is quite unique, it might be worth choosing a more universally accepted neutral colour for the purposes of selling your property. But if you're not planning on moving anytime soon, then go to town.

The first way that plantation shutters can play a critical role in your home, is that they are very energy efficient. You can keep your home running more efficiently, thus lowering the costs of your monthly electricity and utility bills. You will not have to pay so much on your electricity bills per month because you can just use shutters to cover your windows, instead of curtains. If you use shutters, then you can keep your home more insulated from the heat or cold outside. So, you can effectively keep you're home a bit warmer or cooler, depending on the time of the year. For example, you can keep your home cooler by keeping your windows open but closing your shutters. This will mean that you can save on electricity bills because you will not have to keep on switching on your air conditioning systems.

The second way is that these kinds of window shutters can also provide a lot of noise and light isolation. You can block out more noise in your home because shutters can also serve as effective noise insulation. You may also block out more light if you wish because shutters can provide more privacy as well. You can keep the outside world at bay and make your own home a private refuge if you have got shutters in your home's windows.

Next, another way is that you can control the amount of light that gets into your home. There are some window shutters where you can adjust the angle of the shutters. So, by adjusting the angles of the shutters, you can let in more or less light, depending on how much you desire. This will mean that you can make your home have more light, thus you can save on electricity bills as well.

Finally, plantation shutters can also play a critical role in your home due to the fact that they can also offer more security. If a burglar tried to break into your home by getting in through the windows, they will have a much harder time getting in if you have got window shutters. This is because they cannot easily break through the strong materials of wooden window shutters because those shutters will be stuck firmly in place. So, if you have got security concerns at home, add another layer of security by using plantation shutters.

Make Your Home New, Rather Than Buy A New Home

Did you know it is possible for you to transform your home into a place you can really be proud of? There are many things you could do, from putting in a new door to refinishing your staircase railings. It is not only practical to do your own projects, but it can be a lot of fun for the entire family as well. If you use the tips below, you can be successful.

Many tenants who are renting an apartment or home are in a pickle when landlords don't allow tenants to make simple improvements like painting the walls in a different color or removing the wallpaper that doesn't suit their tastes. A great way to get around this is by purchasing flat bed sheets (the unfitted kind) and tacking them in a pleasing design on the wall. This will not harm the underlying wallpaper or paint and can add a touch of personality that won't violate the lease agreement or displease the landlord.

Throwing out an old sofa can be very tempting when it no longer looks new and clean. However, with the same effort it takes you to throw it out, you can buy some nice slipcovers and throw it on your sofa. Slipcovers are available in a myriad of designs and can spice up an old sofa very easily.

When it comes to home improvement, take your current space into consideration before thinking of moving or (if you are the homeowner) adding on with new construction. It may be much more cost effective to convert either an attic or basement into living space. Added costs come into play when you think of moving to larger quarters or if you are thinking of increasing your home space by adding more to your foundation or altering your roof area.

One relatively inexpensive step many homeowners take is to replace a window or two, sometimes home window installation can completely change the functionality of the living space and give a completely new experience to the home.

If you can paint or paper those walls, do a little research about how colors make you feel. The right shade of blue can make a room appear and feel much larger, much more inviting; but the wrong shade can make the walls close in and the atmosphere gloomy. Take your time, youre going to live with the result for a while.

Landscaping can easily give new life to your rental or home property. The right selection of shrubs and hedges are comfortably affordable and can be easily maintained. Trees, however can be another matter altogether. The primary reason you might not go that way is that cheaper, immature trees do little to enhance the attractiveness of a yard, and the more mature trees tend to be very expensive.

Home Window Tinting: Here’s A Few Things You Need To Consider

If you’re considering getting some home window tinting done there are a series of things you should know and understand so you make the best possible decision for your particular environment and circumstances. The first and undoubtedly the most crucial thing you need to understand about window film is the difference between good quality window film and poor film. Here’s why this is so important: Premium window film will last for the life of your windows whereas bad quality window film will only last a few years on windows, especially if your house is somewhere that experiences extreme heat in summer.

The only way for a non-professional person to tell the difference between good and poor quality film is price and guarantee. When making enquirers with a supplier, be sure to ask how long the film is guaranteed for. If it’s not at least 12 years save yourself the pain. And also look out for the shady operator who offers you a guarantee on low quality film and hikes the price, to make it appear like it’s good film, but will either not be around, or simply do nothing if you get back to them because your tint has degraded.

Here’s the tip, (and incidentally I’ve found this to be true with most things), if your only consideration in getting quotes is looking for the lowest possible price, then you will naturally find yourself with the rubbish product and the real price you pay will be in 2-3 years when your windows start to blister, fade and/or peel and look ghastly. Be warned, the cheapest price is usually just crap!

There are a number of benefits you can get from window tinting, and each particular film you use will package some of these benefits, so the first thing you should be sure of is the most important reason for applying window tint in your environment. Lets look at each advantage in a little more detail so you can better figure out the most appropriate solution for your application. The core advantages of good quality window tinting are:

Heat Rejection: Premium window film rejects heat by blocking as much as 73% of Total Solar Energy through windows. That’s cool!

UV Blocking: Good quality window film stops up to 99% of infra red radiation from penetrating your windows. And as a bonus, it also prevents 93% of glare, which does wonders for your view and means things look cool!

Privacy: The right film will also provide daytime privacy, enabling everyone inside to remain cool, enjoy the views, and at the same time have total privacy from onlookers during the day.

Safety and Security: Specially designed safety and security films stop glass from fragmenting on impact. Safety films are made to withstand the force of human impact, while security films can withstand an explosion without shattering. Since the collateral damage from accidents where windows are broken comes from shards of glass spraying like shrapnel, or large sections of glass falling like a guillotine, the major issues associated with safety are avoided. It also stops your windows from becoming a soft and easy entry point for burglars, because both the impact and noise required to break and enter is so noticeable thieves, would rather just move on in search of an easier, ‘softer’ target.

Look and Style: Lastly of course there’s the matter of style. Good quality window film also makes windows look cool; and for many people it’s the aesthetic charm that tinted windows provide that is the driving force for their installation.

The next point I want to discuss is relevant to vehicles and it concerns installing the darkest legal tint on your car or truck.

Regulations vary in all States and Territories of Australia, but generally the darkest legal tint allowed on a vehicle is one with a VLT (visible light transmission) level of 35%, on all vehicle windows (excluding the front windscreen, which cannot have any window film except for a visor strip across the top). The northern Territory and Western Australia are the only exceptions. In the Northern Territory you are legally allowed a minimum VLT of 16% for windows behind the driver; and in WA you are allowed 20% VLT on windows behind the driver. Now as most cars already have a slight tint in the glass in their front windows, so this needs to be taken into consideration when adding tint to a vehicle. Here’s how the maths looks.

If the factory installed windows on your car already block 30% of light, when a film with the “darkest legal tint” of 35% is added to this window, it will emit only 35% of light into a window that is already only emitting 70% of light, so the final VLT will be finalised by the addition of both tint ratings.

This needs to be considered because if a driver by mistake fails to comply with tinting laws, the result can be a fine. But even worse, if a vehicle is involved in an accident and its illegally dark windows are considered by the court to be a contributing factor, this could make your insurance policy invalid, leaving you exposed to the full financial implications of the accident. And if that’s not bad enough criminal charge could apply if property is damaged or people are hurt.

The final thing to consider is that by modifying a vehicle with darker than legal windows, the vehicle is deemed unroadworthy, which means the driver can’t drive the car again until it has been put through the pits, in which case the illegal tint will have to be stripped off the windows. That’s why the combined VLT of both the glass and film really should be considered when you’re selecting the appropriate tint for your car.

So what do I really want you to get from this article? When it comes to window tinting, make sure you use a quality film and that your installer has the knowledge to be able to offer you the best solution for your situation. That way you’ll end up with a range of benefits, instead of a bunch of hassles.

Double Glazed Bay Windows

Double Glazing Sheffield

However, you want to choose windows that not only look good but are energy efficient and double glazed bay windows are the perfect choice. Heres what you need to know. What are Double Glazed Bay Windows?

A bay window is a window that is made up of a central window parallel to the house and two windows that come off the side of this central window at an angle. The bay window provides additional space inside the room, and you can even install window seats inside them, so that you can sit inside and gaze out the windows. Bay windows can be fixed (picture) windows, top hung, casement, or double hung. They can be made from all materials including timber, aluminium and PVC.

Double glazed windows are fitted with double glazing for its insulation properties and energy efficiency. Double glazing is a type of glazing that is made up of two panes of glass that are separated by a space that is filled with air or another similar non toxic gas. The gap in between the glass panes can range from 6mm to 20mm or more, and the larger the gap, the more energy efficient the window will be. Benefits of Double Glazed Bay Windows

Of course, the biggest benefit of using double glazed bay windows in your home is the energy efficiency that they provide. You will find that by switching from single to double glazing, you will reduce heat transmission through the glass significantly, making the inside of your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter. The insulating effect of double glazing means that you will save large amounts of money on your heating and cooling bills. You may be surprised to know that as well as thermal insulation, double glazed bay windows are also great for sound insulation.

Double glazed bay windows are also incredibly attractive and turn your windows into a real feature. You can place a window seat or a couch inside the room just in front of the window and gaze out into the outside world without feeling too hot or cold. You also have an option of window coverings to suit these windows so you can do whatever you want.

Tips On How To Keep Your Conservatory Warm In Winter

Building your own DIY conservatory doesnt just add value to your home, real estate property investment-wise, it also provides a comfortable, charming respite for your entire household. However, it is common knowledge that conservatories tend to become too warm in summer and too cold in winter. This is especially true for older conservatories. However if you if you are willing to do-it-yourself, you can easily keep your conservatory warm in the winter months ahead. Heres how:

1) Check for drafts; keep it draught-proof.

Prevent heat from escaping through a draft in your conservatory by making sure that its window seals are in top shape. Use only high-quality sealants and also add DIY draft excluder (double-sided) or draft snakes underneath all doors to keep cold air from coming in and to keep warm air indoors. In installing window frames for the first time, UPVC is your best option.

2) Invest in quality glass glazing or specialty glass such as ClimaControl Aqua.

Glass for the windows/ceilings/doors of a conservatory is not a very good insulating material. Older conservatories typically have only standard single-glazing glass while modern ones have a much better type of double- or triple-layer glazing that helps keep warm air in. Special types of glass such as ClimaControl Aqua are always a good option when starting your DIY conservatory project so you can save on the money and hassle of having to replace your conservatorys glass panels just because it isnt able to deflect heat.

3) Install conservatory blinds such as Duette® blinds.

Installing blinds to keep your conservatory warm in winter is also a good option. Conservatory blinds add an extra layer of insulation to the conservatory, thus preventing the glass windows from absorbing and using up all the heat in the room. Duette® blinds have double-layered cellular functionality, hence they dont only keep your conservatory warm and cozy during winter; they also help keep your conservatory cool in the summer.

4) Warm up the floors.

Although most heat in a conservatory will rise to the ceiling and escape though the glass panels, some heat will be lost through the floors below. Also, cold typically settles on the floor, so if it becomes freezing during winter, the entire room will also feel very cold.

When building your own DIY conservatory, it may be wise to install, with your underlay, a layer of sheep wool in your floors for extra insulation. You may also want to lay additional carpeting, or simply a rug. Carpets and rugs function as a barrier for cold air that may enter the room through the floors and for keeping in hot air that may escape. Of course, having a soft carpet, too, adds a warm touch to the toes instead of just having hard cold flooring.

5) Add toasty touches.

Finally, you can put a few cozy, toasty touches that will add warmth to your conservatory space. Accessories such as pillows help warm up a couch (especially if it is made of leather), drapes provide additional insulation to your walls, and pops of warm-color accent pieces help set a warm atmosphere/ mood to your room. Candles can add a bit of warmth, too, as do DIY candle terracotta pot heaters you can easily learn online and make yourself at home.

Following these simple tips on how to keep your conservatory warm saves you both money and energy on buying expensive electric heaters, which will only lay unusable by the time summer months come. You will get to enjoy your conservatory all year long and who knows, it can now be a great venue for your next holiday celebration.
